Rainbow Mirror

Every Friday at Pretty Broke is ‘Unique Piece Friday,’ wherein I talk about a unique piece of decor in my apartment. At least, unique to me. Really, just something I want to show off especially.

I stumbled upon this beautiful and fun mirror at Marc’s (a discount store here in Cleveland) and paid a whole whopping ten bucks for it. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it for my living room. It fits right in with my style of decor–whimsical, colorful, and cheerful! It’s actually quite a bit heavier than it looks and hanging it was a task, but I didn’t mind. It graces the spot above my cat’s chair (of course she has her own chair) and I love it.

I also had to take a picture from an angle so I wouldn’t be reflected in the mirror. It was a comical bit of fanageling.

I love those times when I unexpectedly discover an item that’s perfect for my home. The best times are when you’re not specifically shopping for it, and there it is. It’s serendipity!

It begged me to take it home, how could I resist?

Bed Frame, No Shame

Here’s a funny story about my dramatic, overstated bed frame: I bought it in a used furniture store. The day I found it, I walked in and was just browsing around, not really sure if I was actually there to purchase anything. I saw it sitting against a back wall, near the clerk’s counter. I stopped, and gazed at it in wonder. My mouth dropped open. It was like seeing a unicorn.

The lady behind the counter saw me looking at it and mistook my awe for disbelief. “Yeah, were having a hard time getting rid of that,” she said. “I think it’s meant for a special kind of person.” She meant this in a derogatory way, as she clearly found it hideous.

I looked at her and said, “Today is your lucky day. I am that person.”

I bought it fairly cheap considering it’s a queen-sized bed frame, and it came with a (brand new) mattress and box springs. It was used, unwieldy, and ugly to a lot of people, so I got a discount. I had it delivered that very day.

Funny enough, the headboard graces the window, and later when I visited the store again the lady working there said she drives by my place often and sees it in the window, and thinks it’s actually quite lovely now! I guess she just needed a frame of reference.

I have my own unique style, and when I find things I love, I know they were meant for me! I don’t care what other people think.

Star Light, Star Bright

This week I present my beautiful light-up star. It’s made of metal so it harkens back to my metal decor post this week. I got it at a local cultural/religious festival here in Cleveland called The Feast of the Assumption, or more commonly just, “The Feast.” The festival takes place on a street lined with shops and restaurants, and I bought my star in a store that sells wine downstairs and home decor upstairs. A dream!

It cost about twenty dollars, if I remember correctly. It’s been about six years since I bought it. I usually feature it in my Christmas decor, as well.

It may not look like much during the day, while it’s turned off…

But check it out at night!

It takes 3 AA batteries and has two settings. In one mode the colors change constantly (shown here) and in the other one it remains a steady color. You can see how it throws patterns on the walls when it’s lit up as well.

I absolutely adore it. Best random find ever!
